I've been using the following setup on my laptop for about 6 months. The range is about 4x greater than the laptop's built-in WiFi. YMMV.

Perhaps others will find these hardware suggestions useful in helping them connect to sflan.

The card:
Cisco Aironet 352. Dual MMCX , 100mW, 802.11b. Around $120 retail I think. Probably cheaper eBay. Scans and locks onto networks very quickly. Good utility software.

The antenna.
"Rover" 5.5dBi from Pacific Wireless. $25 or so. Not pretty, but folds up relatively unobtrusively. Puts comparable blades to shame.

If you already have a high power MMCX card you're happy with (such as a Senao), try the antenna. My experience is that it won't disappoint.

Good luck!

Hi Webdog,

Can you access a sflan node from your house using this antenna with a senao card? I got a 5dbi blade antenna with a senao card but I can't connect with a node. It's only strong enough to see it.

No, I am currently unable to make a stable connection to an sflan node with the Pac Wireless omni. However, I have had success (bareley) with a 16dBi panel antenna.

A year ago, I was able to connect to sflan9 with a Senao card or Aironet card and a blade antenna, so conditions have significantly deteriorated here since then.

I am in the Sunset, 1.1 miles from sflan9, the nearest node.

Yeah, I know you're in the Sunset. Around 27th ave right? I'm on 25th. It's kinda driving me nuts that I can see it but won't let me connect to it. Oh well, I hope someone in the sunset will set up a node soon.

Hi Darth and webdog,
I live at 42nd Ave in Sunset near Tim's house. I can connect to sflan9 with one of those cheap 18dBi panel antennas with only 12 feet very thick cable. I am using the antenna inside of my room pointing directly to sflan9. The connection is very stable with the speed between 250kps to 700kps. The wireless card I am using for my Notebook computer is one of those under $50 from the local store.

Sflan9 is down right now so I cannot connect..:(

This is the place I got my 18dBi panel antenna.

Hi Nick,

I'm looking at now. Which one are you using?

Hi Darth,

The 18dBi panel antenna I am using is made by Maxrad(under $50). I bought it long time ago so I don't know if they still have it. The cable I am using is the LMR400(under $35).

I think the most important is to have line of sight to get a stable connection and not just the powerful antenna or wireless card.
